COMD 2339: Normal Language Development

This course provides an overview of the typical development of language and speech from birth through adulthood. COMD 2340: Science of Sound:Upon completion of this class undergraduate students will develop a comprehensive understanding of the fundamental principles of Physics, specifically acoustic physics, and be able to combine these principles to solve a wide range of problems including those relevant to Speech pathology and Audiology. The student will be able to utilize this information to describe the normal processes that underlie typical speech behaviors.

COMD 2376: Anatomy and Physiology of the Vocal Mechanism

This is a hybrid class. It meets on Monday and Wednesday in class and on Friday via the internet. This 3-credit course is required for undergraduate students majoring in Speech-language Pathology. It is an introduction to the anatomy and physiology of the speech system, including the muscles, tissues and nerves. The working of these anatomical parts will be discussed in relation to the complex communication systems – respiration, phonation, articulation, neurological control – that enables human speech and language. The focus will be on normal function with limited discussion of communication disorders caused by damaged or inefficient systems.

COMD 4333: Neurogenic Communication Disorders

This course provides a review of neuroanatomy and neurophysiology and mechanisms of brain injury. This review provides the basis for an introduction to neurogenic communication disorders in adults. Topics include language disorders (aphasia), motor speech disorders (apraxia and dysarthria), cognitive disorders (due to traumatic brain injury, right hemisphere brain damage, and dementia), and swallowing disorders (dysphagia). Video and audio samples will be used to introduce students to the various disorders.
