Undergraduate Curriculum

Course Offerings

 
Please note: To obtain a bachelor's degree in Communication Disorders, the following requirements must be met in addition to university core requirements as well as  the requirements of the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences.

Undergraduate Degrees Offered

The required courses which constitute the major in COMD will consist of COMD 1333, 2338, 2339, 2376, 2380, 3371, 3381, 3383, 4333, 4382, 4385, 4489, PSYC 2350 or 2351, PHYS 2340, and  a Social Science Methods course  [COMD 2350, COMM 2300, PSYC 2301, SOC 3400 or Departmental Approved Course].

For those students entering the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders after Fall 2006:

  1. Acceptance into the major will be allowed only after successful completion of the following 9 hours with a minimum grade of B- or better:  These courses are the COMD core.
      1. COMD 2338
      2. COMD 2339
      3. COMD 2376 or PHYS 2340 (First course completed)

  2. On successful completion of the COMD core, student will be officially accepted into the major. An undergraduate meeting will be held at that time to review requirements of the department. Undergraduate SLO Form

  3. Writing in the Profession, COMD 2380, must be completed soon after getting into the major. It is a pre-requisite for Clinical Procedures and COMD 4382. The course must be taken either prior to or concurrently with COMD 3381. This course can only be taken once accepted into the department.

  4. Speech and Hearing screenings are conducted for all majors. This should be completed prior to enrollment in Clinical Procedures (COMD 4489).

  5. A degree plan should be filed once you obtain Junior status or complete 60 hours. Degree plans are filed within the Department of Communication Disorders with Ms. Gold-Singleton, (713) 743-2893 or sgoldsin@uh.edu.

  6. All courses in or for the major must be completed with a grade of B- or better.

  7. Prior to enrollment in a class all prerequisites must be completed successfully (grade of B- or better).  If a student enrolls in a course that they are not eligible they will be dropped.  The department nor the faculty will be responsible for any tuition refunds.

  8. Only one course in or for the major can be repeated. Courses in the COMD core  (COMD 2338, COMD 2339, COMD 2376 or Phys 2340) can not be repeated.

  9. ALL undergraduate students must attend the MANDATORY undergraduate meetings the first semester they enter the department.

Degree Plans

To file a degree plan:

  1. The student must complete 21 hours in the department with a grade of B- or better achieved in all course work. Only one course can be repeated to obtain this goal. Repeated course can not be part of the COMD core ((COMD 2338, COMD 2339, COMD 2376 or Phys 2340)

  2. The student must have completed a total of 60 hours with an overall GPA of 2.5 or better.

  3. The following core courses must be successfully completed:
      • 6 credits core Communications
      • 6 credits core Math or Math Reasoning
      • 6 credits core Natural Science (3 credits of Biology included with a grade of C or better)
      • 6 credits core U.S. History
      • 6 credits core Political Science
      • 6 credits core Social Science [ END of Link]
