Graduate Admission
In order to be considered for admission to the graduate program by the COMD admissions committee, you must have at least have a 3.0 in the last 60 hours of course work and in the major. Letters of recommendation and a personal statement are also required. Admission is competitive. The mean combined GRE for students admitted to the graduate program is 1012, with a range from 800 to 1270. The mean GPA in the major is 3.7 with a range from 3.13 to 4.0.
Required Materials
NOTE: Downloadable forms require the free Adobe Acrobat Reader plug-in.
Applicants will submit one complete admissions application (online). Incomplete applications will be returned. The application material must include:
- A completed graduate studies application. Note that there is a separate application for domestic and international students.
- Two official transcripts from each institution attended. These must be received in a sealed envelope with a stamped seal across the envelope flap.
- Completion of Last 60 Credits Form.
- Completion of Courses in Major Form.
- One official copy of your general GRE test scores. Scores for Verbal, Quantitative and Writing must be included. Only scores from the last 3 years will be accepted. The institution code for the University of Houston Main Campus (UH University Park) is 6870 and the Department code is 0620).
- Three letters of recommendation. Our form must be used.
- A personal statement that is one to two pages that describes interests, relevant activities and any other pertinent information.
- A $25.00 non-refundable processing fee.

- Applicants with a bachelors degree in Communication Disorders that was granted more than 7 years before the anticipated date of admission to the program must re-take the following classes BEFORE applying to the graduate program:
- Comd 2339: Speech, hearing and language development
- Phys 2340: Science of sound (or another Physics class)
- Comd 3371: Phonological disorders
- Comd 3383: Language disorders
- Comd 4382: Management for Individuals with Hearing Impairment
- Comd 4385: Speech Science
- Comd 4489: Clinical Procedures
- Applicants with a bachelors degree in a field other than Communication Disorders must complete the postbachelors program.

Submission Process for International Applicants
In addition to the materials listed above, the International Admissions Office requires that you submit the following:
- An official copy of your TOEFL scores.
- A letter of financial backing.
- The statement of understanding located in the application booklet.
- Two passport size photos.
- A $75.00 (US$) processing fee in addition to the department processing fee. The departmental fee must be sent directly to the Department of Communication Disorders, NOT the International Admissions Office.
The deadline for international applications is February 1 in order for review of transcripts. Please include these materials in your admissions packet.
